A Little Competitiveness

We had our school's annual Sports Day last week, a true British school tradition. The day is essentially a massive track meet in which the entire school participates. La Retraite held its Sports Day at the Crystal Palace stadium in South London. It was great for the kids to have a chance to compete in athletics at a real stadium! My friend Saide is the head of PE, and she did a fabulous job organizing this fun day in which students from different houses (our kids are divided into houses kind of like in "Harry Potter" except ours are called Love, Patience, Faith, Charity and Hope) competed for points. We had races, tug of war, long jump, high jump, relays and even an obstacle relay, which was great fun to watch. I loved seeing all the kids in their PE kits (aka PE uniforms) getting active and having fun. My job was to watch the students waiting to compete for my house, Patience, which basically meant I got to spend the day cheering for students, which was great fun!

The Crystal Palace stadium is built right next to the ruins of the original
Crystal Palace, which Queen Victoria and Prince Albert built for a great
exhibition. Unfortunately, it burned down, and this is all that remains.

Sports Day definitely reminded me of home and made me miss attending athletic events at AMHS. I'm looking forward to getting really into the spirit for next year's Homecoming at my school!
